40% of food in the U.S. is wasted while 1-in-7 Americans face food insecurity. That is why we’ve committed to eliminate food waste by 2025 and nearly all our site managers, chefs and kitchen staff have implemented initiatives to cut waste. We're using data to identify actions that change behavior and increase efficiency in our operations. This is inspiring creativity from our chefs, creating new ways of enjoying food and preserving our planet.

Working Toward a Circular Economy

We’re reducing waste in our business and working together with our suppliers and clients to reduce theirs. Sodexo is focused on preventing all forms of waste through changes in our processes, consumer education and collaboration with external partners. We follow the principles of the circular economy to ensure all waste has a beneficial use and by promoting reuse, recycling, and composting to eliminate avoidable waste going to landfills.

WasteWatch Powered by LeanPath

For Sodexo, the fight against food waste is part of our daily routine. By using the WasteWatch powered by Leanpath program, Sodexo teams are able to easily capture food waste data and take action to drive cultural and behavioral change, whether food waste is generated in the kitchen or by consumers throwing away food.

Influencing Behavior Change

We are training our teams to be sustainably minded and have developed training and personal development programs to empower employees, customers and clients to waste less by celebrating the benefits of conserving food, water, energy, paper and raw material.

For example, Sodexo encourages our customers to reduce food waste through engagement activities including Weigh the Waste where Sodexo collects and weighs the food thrown away at the end of a meal service and advertises how much total wasted food was generated. At the same time, Sodexo promotes suggestions for reducing waste going forward, such as taking smaller servings or asking for a sample before trying a new dish.

Surplus Food Distribution

For the past 20 years, Sodexo has been supporting the fight against hunger and malnutrition through Stop Hunger. While Sodexo teams make every effort to eliminate food waste at the restaurants, with the support of Stop Hunger, we offer the daily surplus to local associations or NGOs for redistribution to those in need.

Packaging and Recycling

We’ve introduced innovative packaging and recycling solutions, such as re-useable materials, bioplastics, and organic material, to help eliminate plastic waste from ending up in landfills. Single-use plastics, which include, containers, boxes, cups, bowls, utensils, wraps, bags, lids, straws and stirrers are causing damage to oceans, seafood, wildlife and the wider environment. Cutting down on single-use plastics is at the core of our fight against waste.
